Milne mystery unfolds at gathering

By Regina Holbert

February’s Book Club selection returns to the stereotypical English country estate to solve A.A. Milne’s “The Red House Mystery.”

Milne, the creator of the Winnie the Pooh children’s stories, was born in London and had an extensive background in mathematics. His friend and colleague H.G. Wells encouraged him to turn some successful magazine sketches into a novel, and in 1905 “Lovers in London” was published.

“The Red House Mystery,” published in 1922, features stock characters that draw the reader into the process of solving the mystery of who killed the host of a gathering of friends at a country home. Readers stumble onto clues along with amateur detectives Tony Gillingham and his friend Bill.

The Book Club will meet to discuss the book at 6 p.m. on Feb. 26 at Taylor Books, 221 Capitol St.
